55 arrestees and convicts have been diagnosed with novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in Konya Type E Closed Prison and referred to hospital.
In a written statement released by Konya Chief Public Prosecutor Ramazan Solmaz yesterday (April 28), it has been indicated that necessary measures have been adopted against Covid-19 outbreak in the Konya Type E Closed Prison in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health and the Science Board.
Noting that entries and exits from the prison have been restricted unless absolutely necessary, he has said, "14-day [isolation] rule is strictly observed in admitting newcomers. Our prison personnel have been isolated to break off the contact of arrestees and convicts with the outside world."
As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), Solmaz has added that they are making great efforts to protect the health of prison personnel as well as arrestees and convicts. Solmaz has also stated:
"After one convict showed the symptoms of coronavirus despite all precautions taken in the in Konya Type E Closed Penal Institution, a tracing work was carried out in coordination with the Provincial Health Directorate.
"In tests conducted in connected wards, 55 convicts/arrestees have tested positive. Referred to hospital, 55 people are in good general health."
Minister Gül said 120 prisoners are in hospital
In a statement earlier yesterday (April 28), Minister of Justice Abdulhamit Gül also indicated, "As of today, 120 arrestees and convicts from 4 separate penal institutions have been diagnosed with Covid-19. All of them have been in treatment at hospitals. While there are no arrestees or convicts in intensive care unit, their general state of health is good."
