Ali İsmail Korkmaz Foundation (ALİKEV) runners confronted police intervention ahead of the 39th İstanbul Marathon.
The police telling them that Ali İsmail Korkmaz, who was killed in Eskişehir during Gezi resistance, is a “political figure” and cannot run with those t-shirts asked the runners to take them off.
As some of the ALİKEV runners’ t-shirts were seized, the runners joined the marathon with new t-shirts.
CHP’s Aksünger: Hatred against Gezi resistance
Among the Gezi runners, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Chair Erdal Aksünger told Zübeyde Sarı from özgürüz.org what happened:
“They told us that Ali İsmail Korkmaz’s photo is a political figure and that we couldn’t attend the marathon with these t-shirts.
“As far as we’ve learned from the police, their superiors gave such an order. Now we await a response from the Ministry of Interior.
“Making people take off these t-shirts originates from grudge. The main issue is the hatred against the Gezi resistance”.
