US thinker and professor in linguistic, Noam Chomsky’s new book entitled “Global Discontents: Conversations on the Rising Threats to Democracy” will be released in the first week of November.
We asked Chomsky to evaluate Turkish leg of “global discontent”. Chomsky evaluated the increasing number of journalist detentions and detention of businessperson and NGO activist Osman Kavala for bianet.
“Most elementary rights of freedom of expression”
Remarking on detention of the journalists in Turkey, Chomsky said, “The detention and persecution of journalists and critics of the Erdogan regime is a severe attack on the most elementary rights of freedom of expression, and a severe blow to Turkish freedom and democracy”.
“These practices should be brought to an end”
The US thinker went on, “These practices should be quickly brought to an end, so that free discussion and flow of information can be revived to the great benefit of Turkish society”.
The EU denounced as well
Remarking that presumption of innocence hasn’t been minded during Kavala’s detention process, Spokesperson for the European Commission Maja Kocijancic demanded that Turkey continue the legal proceedings in line with Geneva Convention.
