Police have attacked the students who wanted to hold a press conference in Kocaeli University in protest of the academics sacked with the Statutory Decrees, detained 10 students.
Telling he himself was subjected to violence as well, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yücel Demirer stated they are waiting at Kocaeli Security Directorate Station for the detained students.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demirer: We wanted to react in a peaceful way
Discharged of his duty at Kocaeli University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demirer spoke to bianet.
Stating that they wanted to issue a press conference in order to react against the expulsions peacefully, Demirer went on:
“Police outnumbered us. They attacked us with pepper gases and shields before we could issue any statement.
“They broke one of our students’ hand by kicking. 10 of our students were detained. We are not waiting at Kocaeli Security Directorate Station. One of our students was released”.
4,811 academics from 112 universities have been discharged
4,811 academics from 112 universities have been discharged by five Statutory Decrees declared during State of Emergency. 16 of the academics have been returned to their duty by another Statutory Decree.
The largest number of discharges occurred at Süleyman Demirel University (193), İstanbul University (192), Gazi University (169) and Pamukkale University (164). (DS/EKN/TK)
