In reply to parliamentary inquiry submitted by Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ has declared that 2,300 people lost their lives in prisons from 2009 to October 16 and that the capacities have been exceeded by 5,704 people.

It was also stated that 19,368 complaints about arbitrary treatment and right violations reached the Ministry of Justice.

Human Rights Association: There are 905 sick prisoners

In its statement on October 26 Patients' Rights Day, The Human Rights Association (İHD) Headquarters Prisoners Commission had announced that there are in total 905 sick prisoners 323 of whom were in severe condition.

Suspicious deaths

According to a report dated October 11 by bianet, following July 15 coup attempt, four people allegedly committed suicide in prisons, one in custody and two people during the attempt to be taken into custody
