One soldier was killed in the explosion on Hakkari-Van highway yesterday (October 16).
The state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) citing security sources reported that the explosion occurred as the soldiers were carrying out mine searching activities on Hakkari-Van highway.
The soldiers noticed the improvised explosive device planted by Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members near Hakkari’s Yeniköprü district. One soldier died as the bomb exploded when the units were trying to defuse the bomb.
Fırat News Agency reported that the explosion occurred as the soldiers were conducting area control at around 12:30 p.m.
According to Doğan News Agency, the soldiers doing area control noticed an explosive device and wanted to check on it. The explosion was detonated by the PKK members at that moment. Hakkari-Van highway was closed to the traffic and an operation launched in the region. (BK/TK)
