Two people have been detained within the scope of investigation launched into armed attack against Cumhuriyet daily’s Editor-in-Chief Can Dündar.
One has been detained on suspicion of incitement, the other of standing guard.
Two suspects are stated to be close friend of Murat Ş.
CNN Türk reported that Murat Ş. in his testimony said, “I could kill if I wanted to but fired in his leg to scare him”.
The attacker named Murat Ş. fired on Can Dündar while the journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül were waiting for the verdict of the trial in which they have been tried over their report of National Intelligence Agency (MİT) Trucks.
NTV reporter Yağız Şenkal was shot in his leg in the attack.
His friend stood guard
It was reported that the attacker is 40 years old, married and father of one, has criminal record for “willful injury”, “threat and insult” in 2011 and “snatching” in 2014, and custody and arrest orders were issued several times on him.
It was fixed that Murat Ş. came to İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan at around 9 a.m. on the day of incident and waited there till 5:20 p.m., the time of the attack 5:20.
The one detained on suspicion of standing guard was noted to follow Dündar and led Murat Ş. know when Dündar came out of the courthouse.
It is being investigated of how Murat Ş. obtained the unregistered 9 mm caliber Beretta Parabellum he used in the attack. Furthermore, three suspects’ mobile phone signals, correspondences and phone calls are retrospectively being examined.
İstanbul Security following the attack has assigned three additional private guards in addition to Dündar’s bodyguard. (ÇT/TK)
