Amnesty International has underlined the absurd extent homophobia and transphobia has reached in Turkey through the video #GayTurtle.
Amnesty International has launched a campaign #GayTurtle to draw attention to the absurd extent homophobia and transphobia has reached in Turkey
The video produced within the joint project run by Amnesty International Turkey and TBWA Istanbul advertising agency, has spread virally on social media and shows “social experiment” run in a busy aquarium shop.
People entering the shop to buy a turtle are told that the turtle they are about to buy is homosexual.
The customers react upon the information with questions and expressions like “Is it contagious?”, “Do you have a proper one of this?”, “Gay won’t work for me”, “Such words do not fit you”.
According to the KaosGL’s (Kaos Gay Lesbian Cultural Researches and Solidarity Association) report “Human Rights Violations Against LGBT Citizens in Turkey”, hundreds have been victims of hate crime over the last five years and at least 41 persons have lost their lives.
Amnesty International has produced the video in order to break down prejudices and urge people to think again. (ÇT/DG)
