The Amnesty has initiated campaign in support of the arrested academics.
The Amnesty has called officials of Turkey to release Muzaffer Kaya, Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy, and Meral Camcı, drop charges against them, not to keep them in lockdown during their arrest period, and stop the investigations launched into them.
“The statement is within the scope of freedom of expression”
Among the signatories of the declaration entitled “We will not be a party to this crime” Assist. Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Kaya, Assist. Prof. Dr. Esra Mungan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kıvanç Ersoy were arrested on March 15, Assist. Prof. Dr. Meral Camcı on March were arrested on March 31 on charge of “terror propaganda”. The four academics had issued a press statement reiterating their peace demand on March 10.
Ankara and İstanbul Chief Prosecutors launched investigation into the four academics.
The Amnesty in its petition addressing Ministers of Justice and Interior said the expression in the declaration and the press statement don’t promote violence:
“The statement of the four academics in the press statement on March 10, and the expressions in the declaration signed by 1,128 academics on January 11 in no way promote terror and that under guarantee within the scope of freedom of expression.
“I am calling you to release Muzaffer Kaya, Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy, and Meral Camcı, drop charges against them, not to keep them in lockdown during their arrest period, and stop the investigations launched into them”. (BK/TK)
