“2015 became a year in which Turkey has become more authoritarian. For this reason, basic rights and liberties are left totally unprotected, which led to very serious right violations”.
Human Rights Association (İHD) announced its Turkey Right Violations Report in 2015.
The report stated that more than 1,370,000 people have been affected by the curfews which started on August 16, 2015 and still ongoing.
Here are the violations emerged during the curfews:
Right to live violations
126 civilians lost their lives between August 16, 2015 and December 31, 2015.
Violation of prohibition of torture and maltreatment
Environment of fear created by excessive use of force, noise cause by fire opened by tanks and armored vehicles revealed itself as a psychological torture on people living there.
Many complaints heard over detention methods, practices during transfer to detention centers, and treatments in detention centers.
Forced migration or deportation
Approximately 1,300,000 people live in the districts where curfew was declared. Estimated one quarter of the population have been deported.
Besides, resulted by the intervention of security forces in the settlements, many house, workplace and public buildings have been damaged.
Violations of right to health
All of the hospitals in the areas where curfew was declared have been surrounded by special operation teams and armored military units. It is realized that a floor has been spared for soldiers in Cizre State Hospital.
This hinders citizens to get to hospital. Because of the curfew, sick ones cannot make it to health centers.
Family doctors cannot provide protective medical service.
Violations of right to education
Educational activities completely halted because of the curfew. A lot of schools got harmed due to clashes.
Violation of right to work
All economic and commerce life has stopped in the areas where curfew was declared. Heavy consequences are being endured by freelancers except public officers.
Artisans cannot open their shops, workers cannot go to work, daily workers are face to face with starvation for being deprived of their income.
Violation of right to travel
Since entrance and exits to the areas where curfew was declared is possible by special authorization only, right to travel has been violated.
Violations of right to shelter and nutrition
Since all the markets are closed in the areas where curfew was declared, serious problems are being faced in supply of food.
Sub-Governorship’s statements as to food distribution is far from solving the problem, these aids cannot reach everywhere.
Water cannot be provided as water supply network has been damaged to the clashes, which goes the same for electricity.
The neighborhoods in which operations took place are razed, there is no house left unharmed.
Violation of prohibition of discrimination and hate crime
The writings security forces wrote on the walls are full of hatred, insulting, and sexist. (AS/TK)
