Cumhuriyet daily is holding today’s editorial meeting in Silivri, where its arrested Chief Editor Can Dündar and its Ankara Representative Erdem Gül are being held.
Gül and Dündar who had been arrested due to their report on the Trucks of National Intelligence Organization (MİT) are being kept since 19 days in Silivri Prison. The two discharge demands submitted before had been declined.
Deputy Chief Editor Tahir Yurtseven, News Coordinators Murat Sabuncu and Ayşe Yıldırım Başlangıç, Editor in Chief Bülent Özdoğan, News Center Director Aykut Küçükkaya as well as some managing directors, editors and employees in the departments of Economics, Foreign News, Culture and Arts, and Sports and Domestic News have attended the meeting held before Silivri Penal Institution Campus.
What had happened?
Prosecution started as to the article published with the headline “Here are the weapons Erdoğan claim to not exist” on May 29 over “Procuring information as to state security”, “Political and military espionage”, “Declaring confidential information”, “Propagandizing terror organization”.
Chief Public Prosecutor Hadi Salihoğlu had declared the prosecution by press release.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had personally filed a criminal complaint and requested Dündar to be sentenced to one aggravated life imprisonment, one life imprisonment and 42 years in prison for “targeting state interests by using images contrary to facts”.
Erdoğan on a live broadcast on TRT had said, "I guess the person who made this special news will heavily pay for it". (EA/DG)
