Men killed 20 women, three other men and two children, injured 24 women, raped 11 and sexually harassed seven more in July, 2012, according to news reports compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies.
Istanbul topped the list in women's murders, while the northwestern province of Bursa saw the largest number of cases of violence toward women. The southern province of Antalya also witnessed incidents of rape more so than any other province.
July 1:
Murder
*Ö.S. stabbed and killed his wife Neşe Sidar, 32, out on the street in Istanbul. Sidar wanted to file a divorce suit because her husband was subjecting her to violence, and she was already living away from him. Sidar also filed a complaint with the police in connection with the threats her husband had made, but she reportedly did not ask for protection.
*A.T., 32, stabbed his girlfriend Zeynep Ece Sevim, 20, on the grounds she had mocked him in Istanbul. He then choked her to death with a pillow case.
July 2:
Rape
*Two men riding on motorcycles in the southern province of Antalya abducted a 52 year old women and brought her to a secluded location. They first broke her leg when she resisted them, then they raped her. The police launched an investigation.
July 3:
Murder
*E.Ş., 40, stabbed his wife Sündüs Şen, 36, when she came back home to collect her belongings after she left her home in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ because the couple were unable to get along. E.Ş then called the police emergency hotline 155 and told them he had murdered his wife. Police took him under custody.

*R.Ç., 52, battered his wife F.Ç. in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak. R.Ç. was placed under restraining orders for 15 days upon a complaint filed by his wife. R.Ç., however, came back home despite the order and beat his wife again. Police then took him under custody, and the investigation is still underway.

*S.E., 26, beat his wife Y.E., 24, in the middle of the street in the northwestern province of Bursa, only a week after he came out of prison. Police detained S.E., while Y.E. was hospitalized.

*M.A., 39, strangled his wife Neriman Acır, 29, to death with a cable in Istanbul. The couple had repeatedly broken up due to their disagreements, only to reunite again on each occasion, but M.A. killed his wife this time around because she refused to wear an engagement ring he had bought, leading him to think she was cheating on him.
Sexual harassment
*İ.Y., 46, sexually harassed his wife E.Y., 32, and their four children, S.Y., 18, M.Y., 17, P.Y., 14, and C.Y., 10, in Istanbul. The woman and her children were consequently placed under protection upon her request. İ.Y. was placed under restraining orders not to approach his family within a radius of 300 meters.

*K.İ. beat his wife A.İ. in the central province of Kayseri. The victim was hospitalized, while authorities released her husband after receiving his testimony.
July 6:

*M.K. beat his sister Y.K., 18, in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on the grounds she had a boyfriend. Y.K. consequently committed suicide.
July 7:
Murder
*Police officer Ü.K., 29, killed his wife Gülşah Karakafa, also a 24 year old police officer, with a pistol on the street in Ankara. The victim had reportedly wanted to get a divorce. Ü.K. then committed suicide. The prosecutor's office had accepted a request by Gülşah Karakafa to provide her with protection two years ago, but the authorities never provided her with an escort as the legal procedures dragged on for too long.

*M.S.Ö. battered his girlfriend M.Ş. following a quarrel in the western province of Manisa. M.Ş. obtained a medical report the next day to prove she had been battered, but M.S.Ö. then stabbed her. Law enforcement officials caught M.S.Ö. an hour after the incident, while M.Ş. was still in hospital.
July 8:

*İ.A., 58, killed his wife Asiye Albay, 46, with a pistol at home and later committed suicide in the central province of Çankırı. The couple had already parted their homes, and the victim had gone to İ.A.'s house to clean it. İ.A. was already undergoing psychological treatment, according to reports.
*Ş.A., 36, killed his 10 year old son Kağan Altay by hanging him from a tree to take revenge from his wife who had left their home in the northwestern province of Kırklareli. He then committed suicide, while his wife had a nervous breakdown when she learned of the news.

*A group of assailants attacked S.Y., a female doctor, because she warned them not to make noise and disturb the other patients in a hospital in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa. Law enforcement officials detained the assailants, while S.Y. received a report for exemption from work for five days.

*K.T., 50, and S.İ. attempted to rape F.A., 19, by threatening her with a knife in the southwestern province of Muğla. F.A., however, snatched the knife, lightly injured K.T., broke the window and made a run out of the house. She subsequently notified the gendarmerie who then devised a set-up to catch the assailants. F.A. accordingly met with K.T. the next day, and the gendarmerie arrested him, while S.İ. was released pending trial.
July 9:
Rape
*S.K., 22, and M.Y., 23, raped two minors D.Ö., 14, and G.H., 16, and forced them into prostitution in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak. Authorities arrested four men between the ages of 17 and 23 in connection with the incident, while six other men between the ages of 25 and 32 were released pending trial. One of the men attempted to jump out of the window and run away while the police was questioning the suspects. He was put in hospital care.
July 10:

*Police officer H.Ş.from the Siverek District Police Headquarters in Şanlıurfa beat his wife D.Ş. He was taken under custody, while D.Ş. was taken to hospital.
Violence begotten by violence
*P.D., 32, used a shotgun to kill her husband Esat Döl, 35, who was subjecting her to violence in the southeastern province of Bingöl.
*B.B., 17, killed Gürsel Yalçın, 32, with a pistol after he sexually harassed her mother when he came into their home to fix their broken refrigerator in the northwestern province of Kocaeli.
July 11:

*İ.Ü. stabbed his wife Demet Üçer to death after she filed a divorce suit in the central province of Kayseri.

*A group of men attempted to rape Ç.B., a stranger, when she got into their friends' vehicle in the Black Sea province of Trabzon. Ç.B. managed to protect herself with a pepper spray she pulled out of her bag, but the assailants battered her nonetheless.

*L.A., 17, was found unconscious by the banks of River Seyhan after she was raped by İ.Y. in the southern province of Adana. Medical officials found signs of battery on her chest and throat, while İ.Y. was taken under custody.
July 12:

*Y.Ç., 38, stabbed his wife G.Ç. to death at home in Istanbul. Y.Ç. reportedly had a criminal record, and law enforcement officials are still looking for the suspect who remains at large.

*Pediatrics expert G.M. harassed two women on Aegean University's campus in İzmir by showing them his genitals. He was detained and later released pending trial.
July 15:

*F.Y. knocked S.U. unconscious and raped her in the southern province of Antalya.
*Y.I., 57, raped his wife A.I., 47, in Istanbul.

*Imam M.N. sexually harassed R.K. in the eastern province of Kahramanmaraş. His former student R.K. had approached him to greet him and kiss his hand, but Imam M.N. responded by kissing her on the lips on the street. He was released pending trial.

*Mayor E.K., 63, from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) began grazing his animals in a meadow in the central province of Kayseri owned by S.D. who consequently told him to take his animals away to another meadow. E.K. responded by beating S.D. with a stick. S.D. later got ten stiches on her head and is still in critical condition.
*E.Y. crushed his former wife E.S. with a pickup truck while she was on her way to work in the northwestern province of Bursa. She was taken to hospital, while police is still searching for E.Y.
July 17:
Sexual harassment
*Law enforcement officials caught M.Ş., 35, who was shooting footages of women wearing skirts with a hidden camera in his bag in metrobuses in Istanbul.
Rape
*C.K.T., 37, raped his ex-girlfriend B.Ö., 25, at her home in the Black Sea province of Samsun. C.K.T. had stood trial before because he had broken B.Ö.'s arm. This time around, he battered her after forcing his way into her home.
July 19:
Murder
*Z.B., 31, stabbed his wife Mahmure Karakule, 19, to death at an Istanbul home. The couple had had a religious (unofficial) wedding, and Z.B. had been constantly using violence against his victim. Their neighbors had called the police three days ago after they overheard a particularly noisy quarrel, but the police did not take any action on the grounds they were just a quarreling couple. Z.B. said "I lost my temper because she did not cook meatballs with potato" in his testimony.
*Ç.F., 35, stabbed his wife Zahide Feyzioğlu, 33, to death in Istanbul. She had filed a complaint before when Ç.F. had beaten her and threw her out of the house. She was consequently placed in a shelter home and given an escort. Ç.F. then killed her in the kitchen when she decided to pay a visit to her old home to see her sick child.
*A.K., 23, killed his wife İpek Çınar, 18, and her mother Aysel Çınar, 35, with a pistol in Adana. The couple had had a religious (unofficial) wedding.

*M.O., 45, beat his wife Ü.O. because she refused to have sexual intercourse in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak. He then stabbed her the next day. She was consequently taken to hospital, while M.O. was released pending trial.
*M.K. injured his wife M.K. with a pistol at a restaurant they jointly ran in Istanbul. The victim is still in critical condition.

*S.E., 28, broke into a room in the hotel where he was employed in the southern province of Antalya and attempted to rape E.R.P., a Swedish tourist. He was arrested.
July 21:

*G.Ç., 28, kidnapped his ex-girlfriend Melike Demirel, 25, and killed her with a shotgun because she refused to get back together in the Aegean province of İzmir. He then committed suicide.

*H.G., 34, shot his wife S.G. with a pistol after she refused to get back together in Istanbul. H.G. then committed suicide, mistakenly believing he had killed her.

*N.D. and O.G. raped 27 year old tourist O.K. after they took her to a forest with their taxi in Antalya. Authorities took them under custody.
*K.S., 32, raped his girlfriend S.K., 33, at a home in the Black Sea province of Samsun. Law enforcement officials then detained him.
July 23:

*Ş.C. hired a killer to murder his wife M.C.'s father and brother after she returned to their home because Ş.C. had been subjecting her to violence in the southern province of Adana.

*R.D., 29, seriously injured his mother-in-law F.A. with a knife in Adana because she did not let him see his wife whom he had been beating and their two children.
*M.Y., 45, stabbed and injured his wife A.Y., 43, at an internet cafe in the central province of Konya because she hit a garbage container.
*M.K.G., 37, subjected his girlfriend B.D., 17, to violence after he promised to marry her and consequently learned through the media that her family was looking for her in the northwestern province of Balıkesir. She took refuge with the police and filed a complaint.

*Ç.A., 35, killed his girlfriend Nezihe Yavuz with a pistol out on the street after they had a quarrel in the eastern province of Kahramanmaraş.

*U.S., 34, stabbed his girlfriend Gülnara Bak, 43, to death on the grounds she was speaking in Georgian on the phone in Samsun. U.S. later said he thought she was swearing. It turned out, however, that U.S. had earlier been arrested on murder charges in 1997 and that he was released in connection with the "Conditional Release Law" in 2002.

*S.E., 41, beat his daughter İ.Y.E., 17, in Adana on the grounds that she had her photograph taken with a bikini by the seaside. His wife Y.E. filed a complaint on the grounds that he incessantly beat her and their daughter.
*U.D., 31, beat his wife F.D., 28, along with his parents in Samsun. Later reports revealed that U.D. and his father frequently employed violence against her.
*Y.K.T., 37, took his former wife Y.B., 25, hostage to convince her to come back home in İzmir. Y.K.T. injured the provincial deputy police chief A.S. with a knife while he was trying to dissuade him.
*İ.K. injured his mother A.K. with a knife in their home because she refused to buy him a new computer in the northwestern province of Bursa.
July 26:
Murder
*U.S. killed a woman by stabbing her on the street in Samsun due to unidentified reasons. Bystanders then attacked U.S. who was consquently taken to hospital and later brought to the Homocide Bureau in the Police Headquarters. The investigation is still underway.
July 27:

*Z.A., 34, stabbed his wife Derya Akar, 29 to death at home in Istanbul. Z.A. later claimed he had caught her with another man while testifying to the authorities. The investigation is still underway.
*A.K. choked his two daughters to death after he took them from the home of his former wife A.G. in the northwestern province of İzmit. He then attempted to commit suicide but was later transferred to court after he received treatment at a hospital.

*C.T. seriously injured his wife Ö.T. with his unlicensed pistol, after she filed a divorce suit and parted her home with him in the southeastern province of Gaziantep. "My son called me and said her mother had opened a new Facebook page under the name "Yağmur Fıstık" ("Hottie.") I lost my nerves and shot her," he later said in his testimony.
July 29:

*F.D. shot his wife Derya Dağı in the head with a hunting rife in the northwestern province of Bolu. He later claimed to have shot her mistakenly, but authorities arrested him nonetheless.
*Police officer Ş.G., 42, shot dead his ex-wife Mine S., 31, with a pistol in Ankara.

*Ş.O. sexually harassed H.A., an undercover police officer, on the street in Istanbul. H.A. consequently took him under custody, and he was later transferred to court.

*N.Y., 42, stabbed and killed his wife Şerife Y., 37, and Ömer İ., 29, whom she had started to live with after she left his home in İzmir.

*M.E. injured his former wife Y.B. in the face in Antalya. Y.B. had divorced him one and a half years ago because he had been beating her. M.E. then injured her when he learned she had a new relationship.
*H.K.V. battered his girlfriend S.Ü. inside his car after he saw her with one of his friends on the street in Istanbul. S.Ü. was taken to hospital, while H.K.V. ran away. H.K.V. then found S.Ü. in the hospital, locked her inside a house and tortured her for two days. The prosecutor's office launched an investigation.
Rape
*D.K., N.C., A.A. and C.A. raped A.P. after meeting her on Facebook and later forced her into prostitution in Adana. The men were arrested pending trial, while the men who had intercourse with her in exchange of money will stand trial without arrest. (EZA/ÇT)
