According to a data collection surveyed by bianet based on news of local and national newspapers and news agencies, 14 women were killed by Turkish men in December 2011. A total of 259 women were reportedly killed by male perpetrators throughout the year 2011; 118 women were raped.
The news combed through by bianet revealed that 34 women were injured by men in December in Turkey; 15 women were raped, 16 harassed. Six children were abused.
The majority of cases of violence against women occurred in the Marmara region in north-western Turkey.
Murder
Male culprits in Turkey killed 14 women and three men in eleven different provinces in December 2011. Two men committed suicide after the offence; one attempted to kill himself and three men surrendered to the police.
Most of the slain women were killed with knives. Eight women were stabbed to death, five were shot, one woman was strangled. One woman was fatally injured when she was hit by a bus after she had rushed out of a café because she was treated violently by her husband.
Most of the women murdered in December were killed by their husbands. Five women were murdered by their husbands; two by thieves who had entered their homes; one woman by her husband she was married to in an imam wedding; one woman by her former husband; one by her former boy-friend, one by her brother and one woman was killed by a man who had supposedly fallen in love with her.
One woman had complained about a man on the grounds of received threats and was killed by that man in front of the courthouse at the day of the first hearing. One woman went to her home under the supervision of three police officers in order to collect her belongings. There, she was killed by her brother.
One man killed his brother-in-law because he treated his sister violently. One man murdered his brother who had wounded his mother and sister. A son killed his father because he beat his mother. One woman broke into the house of a man who had treated her violently and killed him. One man killed a friend of his girl-friend who had sent her a text message.
The murders occurred in Adıyaman, Amasya, Antalya, Adıyaman, Amasya, Antalya, Denizli, Kocaeli (2), Malatya, Nevşehir (2), Sakarya, Tokat, Trabzon and Zonguldak.
The male culprits were between 17 and 71 years old; the slain women were between 18 and 61 years of age.
Violence - Injury
34 women in 16 different provinces were injured by males in December 2011. The most cases of violence against women happened in Istanbul. Over all, incidents of violence were reported in the provinces of Adana, Adıyaman (2), Ankara, Antalya (2), Aydın, Bursa, Edirne, Erzurum, Eskişehir, Istanbul (9), Izmir (3), Kırşehir, Kocaeli (3), Tekirdağ, Urfa (5) and Zonguldak.
The majority of cases of violence against women involved their spouses. 13 women were treated violently by their husbands; four by their former husbands; three by their boy-friends; two by their husbands in imam marriages; two by their former boy-friends; two by their colleagues; one woman by her brother; and one by a man unknown to her. Two women were wounded when they jumped out of the window to escape from violent treatment.
According to the data compiled, 20 women were beaten; seven were injured with a knife; two were injured with a gun; one transgender woman was wounded with a sword. 18 women received medical treatment in hospital.
One of the male perpetrators who imposed violence to women tried to kill himself subsequent to the offence; two wounded police officers that had come to the scene of incident. Two culprits surrendered to the police after they had injured their wives with a gun. One man forced entry into a house despite a restraining order and beat his wife.
The assailants were aged between 19 and 45; the age of the violently treated women ranged between 21 and 88 years.
Rape
As reported by the skimmed news, 15 women in eight provinces were raped by men in December. Most of the rape cases happened in Istanbul and Antalya. Rapes were reported in the provinces of Adana (3), Ankara, (2) Antalya (3), Bursa, Istanbul (4), Nazilli, Samsun and Zonguldak.
Two women were raped by their friends; two by their husbands; one by her boy-friend and one by her former boy-friend. Six women were robbed after the rape. Nine men were arrested.
The rapists were between 23 and 52 years old. The women were between 16 and 50 years of age.
Harassment - Sexual Violence
16 women in eight provinces experienced harassment and/or sexual violence in December 2011. Incidents of harassment and sexual violence came up in the news in the provinces of Ankara, Antalya (2), Bursa (4), Erzurum, Istanbul (4), Malatya, Sakarya and Samsun.
12 women were harassed by strangers. Two experienced harassment by their bosses; one by her father-in-law; one by her boy-friend. One of the women was injured and taken to hospital. Four women were robbed.
The attackers were between 23 and 71 years of age; the women were between 17 and 44 years old. Five of the molesters were imprisoned; ten will be tried.
Child Abuse
Six incidents of child abuse were reported in six different provinces in December, i.e. in Samsun, Zonguldak, Karaman, Istanbul, Adana and Izmit.
The male perpetrators were between 19 and 46 years old; the children were aged between 8 and 15 years.
Regional Distribution
In December 2011, 84 women in 27 provinces were reportedly imposed to violence, murder, attempted murder, rape, harassment and injury; six children were abused. Again, the majority of incidents of violence against women was reported in the Marmara region.
Out of a total of 84 reported cases, 34 incidents happened in the Marmara region; 13 in the Mediterranean area; ten in the Black Sea region; nine in Central Anatolia; eight in South-East Anatolia; six in the Aegean region and four in Eastern Anatolia.
The cities where most of the incidents of violence against women were reflected in the news were Istanbul (18), Antalya (8), Adana (5), Kocaeli (5) and Urfa (5). (ÇT/VK)
