Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Yüreğir Youth Organization Chair Eren Yıldırım has been released from prison.
Taken into custody together with three other people after having a row with the Vefa Social Support Group, which has been founded to bring aid to people affected by coronavirus pandemic, Yıldırım was first released.
However, targeted by President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who also drew a parallel between his row with the group in Adana and the armed attack on another Vefa group in Van, Yıldırım was detained again upon the objection of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to his release. He was arrested on May 17.
Eren Yıldırım has been released after 17 days of imprisonment.
The release of Yıldırım has been announced by journalist and former CHP MP Barış Yarkadaş on his Twitter account.
"Our Adana Yüreğir Youth Organization Chair and Vefa Group Member Eren Yıldırım was released by the court as of 3.09 p.m.," Yarkadaş has said and added: "That being the case, yet another lie has collapsed. A 17-day captivity has finally come to an end a short time ago. Welcome back Eren..."
