27 years ago today (January 24), investigative journalist and writer Uğur Mumcu was assassinated in front of his house in Ankara.
Mumcu has been commemorated on the street where he was assassinated and which was named after the late journalist.
The commemoration was attended Republican People's Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, CHP's Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Levent Gök and CHP MPs as well as his family, colleagues, readers and several people.
Mumcu family and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu laid carnations and lighted candles on the Monument of Unidentified Murders and the site where Mumcu lost his life. Before the commemoration, Kılıçdaroğlu met with his wife Güldal, daughter Özge and son Özgür Mumcu at their home.
Kılıçdaroğlu said, "The traitors tried to destroy him, but he lives with his thoughts. We remember him with respect and love every year. We will also keep on commemorating him. People come here with the same thoughts. His only thought was a democratic Turkey free from corruption. We still have the same aim within the same frame. We wage his struggle and fight."

Cumhuriyet newspaper workers, Journalists' Union of Turkey (TGS) Chair Gökhan Durmuş, TGS Secretary General İlkay Akkaya, TGS İstanbul Branch Chair Banu Tuna and TGS Members came together in front of the Uğur Mumcu Monument in Harbiye, İstanbul.
Durmuş said, "We commemorated three journalists in January. On January 8, Metin Göktepe was massacred; on January 19, Hrant Dink and on January 24, Uğur Mumcu... Those who think that if we kill journalists, we will cover up the truth and sound the death knell for the profession of journalism have seen that they are mistaken. Several journalists who were born in the year when Uğur Mumcu was killed continue his tradition of journalism."
