Canada-based Alamos Gold firm has announced that it halted the construction activities gold mine project on Ida Mountains in the western Çanakkale province "until its license is renewed."
The company said that it is working with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to secure the renewal of the license, yet delayed its activities until late 2020 due to "uncertainty around the timing of the concession renewal."
The company cut down around 200 thousand trees although the Environmental Impact Assessment Report envisaged that 45 thousand trees will be cut down.
Ida Solidarity Association Chairperson Ekrem Akgül had told bianet that four million trees would be cut down had the project continued.
Mining activities will also cause the usage of cyanide around Atikhisar Dam and its basin, the sole water source of Çanakkale.
Ecology Union said after the Alamos Gold statement that the company should immediately leave the area, otherwise it will be an "occupier."
