New Attack on Northern Forests: ‘Turkish Stream’

Northern Forests Defense has staged a demonstration on İstiklal Stree in İstanbul in protest of destruction of ancient Strandzha Forests in Thrace.

A natural gas pipe line of which Russia will make profit of 750 million dollars per year is being constructed in Thrace’s Northern Forests Strandzhas.

As part of the project, forestry area of 700 decare was destroyed in May 2018. If the project continues, the Strandzhas will be slit thoroughly for 30 kilometers and the trees that host a large number of species will be cut down.

“No vote to enemies of nature”

It was stated that two days before the election day was especially chosen for the demonstration, which was supported by Don Quixote Bicycle Collective, Preservation of Natural Life (DAYKO) Foundation and Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Architect Burak Kaan Yılmazsoy.

Nature and life advocates said, “We will not vote for any party which is hostile to green, nature, forest and living beings”.

“May the massacre be stopped”

In a statement read out by Ayşe Yıkıcı from Northern Forests Defense, it was expressed that Northern Forests is being destroyed with 3rd Bridge, 3rd Airport and Northern Marmara Highway.

“We want the nature massacre called ‘Turkish Stream’ being built for Russian natural gas pipe line to be stopped, and all companies which are hostile to nature and life to immediately leave Thrace and Northern Forests”. (TP/TK)
