Amnesty International (AI) announced that Cihan Gün and Özgür Karakaya, who were taken into custody together with Engin Ceber, were still in Metris Prison, facing torture and bad treatment. It has also stated that they were in need of immediate independent medical examination and assistance.
The organization has launched an activity for 22 year old Karakaya and 18 year old Gün.
AI: Those responsible should face justice immediately
Gün and Karakaya were taken into custody together with Engin Ceber after the press release on September 28 held to protest that the police officer who shot and paralyzed Ferhat Gerçek was still not arrested. Engin Ceber had died on October 10 in the hospital he was taken to after he went to come possibly due to the injuries he received while in custody and Metris Prison.
IA demands that the authorities, among them Minister of Interior Beşir Atalay, bring those responsible to justice.
Torture both in the police center and the prison
In their statements to Prosecutor Cevdet Doğan, Karakaya and Gün gave a detailed account of how they were tortured first in the police center and later in the prison.
They were beaten heavily in the police vehicles and the police center and the same followed treatment was repeated by the gendarmeries in e prison with sticks, batons and water.
Today, seven people from the administrative board of the Association of Solidarity With the Families of Prisoners (TAYAD) filed a complaint with the Sultanahmet Hall of Justice against Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Şahin, Metris Prison’s First and Second Directors, the guardians on duty, the gendarmerie soldiers responsible for external security and their superiors, the officials of the Istinye Police station and their superiors, the prosecutor and judge who ruled for the arrest for their responsibility in Ceber’s death.
Lawyer Barkın Timtik hopes that this complaint will be combined with the investigation file in the Office of the Bakırköy Prosecutor.
Lawyer Oya Aslan, with whom bianet met about the matter, says that she talked to Karakaya and Gün and they told him that the bad treatment ended after the public reaction, but they were still in pain. Aslan is getting ready to file charges. (TK/EÜ/TB)
