One person has been killed in an explosion in Mardin’s Nusaybin district. Mehmet Saik Malak, 48, had gone to the Yenişehir neighborhood, which is under curfew, to collect belongings from a house there.
The neighborhood had been closed off with a wire fence. Malak and four others had wanted to take some belongings from the house, which is on Çağ Street. Whilst he was taking the belongings from the bottom floor of the house, an explosive hidden among them went off. Malak was killed and the four others injured. According to a report by DHA, the explosive device was a trap left by the PKK.
Dicle News Agency, however, said it was not clear who was behind the explosion. According to its report, four people including the landlord were taken into custody after the incident and brought to the District Police Headquarters.
According to DHA’s report Malak had come from Syria and taken Turkish citizenship. He had six children.
A curfew was declared on 14 March in order to raze the barricades and ditches constructed by the PKK in Nusaybin, but was lifted in 12 neighborhoods on 25 July. The curfew is still in place in the neighborhoods of Abdulkadir Paşa, Fırat, Dicle, Yenişehir, Zeynel Abidin and Kışla. (EA/DG)
