The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) shared Turkey's annual Cinema and Theater Statistics for 2019 today (June 16).
According to the statistics shared by the Institute, in 2019, the number of movie houses decreased by 1.1 percent compared to 2018 and was 2 thousand 826. During this period, the number of seats in the movie houses decreased by 1.4 percent and was 337 thousand 914.

Cinema audience decreased by 12.8 percent
The number of cinema audiences in Turkey decreased by 12.8 percent in 2019 compared to 2018 and was 56 million 479 thousand 209.
While the number of national productions' audience decreased by 17.5 percent and was 32 million 331 thousand 764, the number of foreign productions' audience decreased by 5.6 percent and was 24 million 147 thousand 445 people.

The number of movies shown in 2019 increased by 4.4 percent compared to 2018 and was 68 thousand 386.
In the same period, the number of national productions shown decreased by 3.6 percent and was 29 thousand 64, while the number of foreign productions shown increased by 11.2 percent and was 39 thousand 322.

Number of theater seats increased by 12.8 percent
In 2018/2019 season, the number of theater halls increased by 4.1 percent compared to the 2017/2018 season and the number of theater seats increased by 12.8 percent. Number of the theater halls was 766 and the seating capacity was 354 thousand 688.

Increase in the number of theater performances
As compared to the 2017-2018 season; the number of performances performed in theater halls increased by 0.2 percent and was 33 thousand 835 in 2018-2019 season.
The number of performances for original shows in theater halls decreased by 0.3 percent and the number of performances for translated/copyright shows increased by 1.9 percent compared to last season.
Theatre audience increased by 0.7 percent
As compared to the 2017/2018 season; the number of shows performed in theatre halls increased by 4.5 percent and was 9 thousand 796. The number of original shows increased by 4.7 percent and that of translated/copyright shows increased by 3.3 percent compared to last season.
In 2018/2019 season, the number of theater audiences increased by 0.7 percent compared to the 2017/2018 season and reached 7 million 899 thousand 547. The number of theater audiences for original shows rose by 0.2 percent and that of theater audiences for translated/copyright shows increased by 2.5 percent compared to last season.
Increase in children shows performed in theater halls
As compared to the 2017/2018 season; the number of adult shows in theater halls increased by 6 percent and the number of children shows performed in theater halls increased by 3 percent in 2018/2019 season.
In this period, while the number of performances for adult shows in theater halls increased by 6.8 percent, number of performances for children shows decreased by 6.9 percent and reached 15 thousand 237.
In the same period, the number of audiences for adult shows increased by 6.7 percent and the number of audiences for children shows decreased by 6.9 percent. (AÖ/SD)
