Animal rights defenders have been on the streets ahead of the October 4 World Animal Day to draw attention to the right violations that the animals are subjected to.
Confederation of Animals’ Right to Live (HAYKONFED) and Animal Rights Monitoring Committee (HAKİM) placed a black wreath on animal shelter with the capacity of thousands of animals in İstanbul’s Tuzla district on Saturday (October 1).
They left a wreath in front of the presidential building of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) because of the right violations against street animals and in front of Experimental Medical Research Institute (DETAE) within the body of Çapa Medical Faculty for it causing animals’ deaths through intense tortures yesterday (October 2).
HAKİM Coordinator Burak Özgüner declared their demands in the protest:
We demand that animals be defined as individuals with natural rights who can feel.
We demand that all regulations, especially Law on Protecting Animals No. 5199 be re-regulated with the participation of all right to live defender NGOs based on the United Nations Declaration on Animal Welfare, international treaties and Turkey’s realities.
Demanding that experiments on animals be banned completely, the activists stated that they will convey their demands to politicians to ensure animal rights are guaranteed by law. (ÇT/TK)
