Animal rights defenders, city and ecology movements have told that the animal shelter built by İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) in Kısırkaya is still operating despite court decision and that the protocol planned to be signed with district municipalities will increase illegal animal roundups and animal rights violations.
Independent Animal Freedom Activists, Quadruped City, Conserving and Improving Animal Rights Association (HAGİD), İstanbul City Defense, Northern Forests Defense, Sarıyer City Solidarity and Freedom to Earth Association issued a joint press statement today (January 8).
Kısırkaya will cause systematical animal massacre
Mine Yıldırım with Quadruped City reminded that the construction in question has been aborted by İstanbul 6th Administrative Court:
“The facility advertised by saying it provides comfort of a ‘five-star hotel’ will actually lead to killings of thousands of animals. Kısırkaya concentration camp is going to be a construction where İBB’s policies od destruction will be centralized and animal killing will be systematical”.
It wants to be built in the Asian side
Behzat Diriker with Northern Forests Defense reminded that a similar shelter will be built in the Asian side too.
“The purpose is to eradicate the street animals labelled as a problem of İstanbul. The land allocated for the shelter is located in the protection zone of Ömerli Drinking Water Basin which caters for at least one third of İstanbul’s drinking water. Kısırkaya and similar projects are dangerous for both nature and street animals of İstanbul”.
Life defenders announced that they will be in front of İBB Presidential building in Saraçhane at 1 p.m. on January 14 to stand against the protocol planned to be signed with district municipalities. (NV/TK)
